Coppin House is a pair of identical, 27-unit, 4-story apartment buildings for young adults and families. The two buildings face each other across an alley and are joined by a walkway. This is the second of three projects being completed simultaneously by Interfaith Housing - we covered the first, Sankofa House last week.
The green approach on this project is very similar to Sankofa House, including the Illinois DCEO energy grant and an unusually open site, allowing for bioswales and rain gardens. Important differences include a radiant floor heating system throughout, which in the U.S. is still quite unusual in a project of this large of scale. Solar water heaters are also included in the project.
Interfaith’s community partner on this project is Coppin Memorial A.M.E. Church, which currently hosts a Head Start day care center. Other project team members include general contractor Safeway Construction and commissioning agent WMA Consulting Engineers.
