The Finfrock Residence is another example of an architect’s own home seeking Chicago Green Homes certification, similar to others that are complete or in-progress around town. At three floors plus a roof deck and basement, this one is on the larger side, but attempts to make up for that with an emphasis on site design and energy-efficiency.
Most of the green site elements that are possible are included here, such as a rain garden, rain barrels, green roof, and native landscaping. There is access to the garage roof via a second-floor “bridge” - this configuration is increasing in popularity as residents of dense neighborhoods seek to maximize usable outdoor space. This homeowner is moving into the city from Oak Park - a perfect example of a resident that wants the urban experience without sacrificing access to the outdoors.
We haven’t included a home built with advanced framing techniques, the basis of energy-efficient design here, for a few months. The home also includes high-efficiency mechanical equipment and radiant heat, and as you can see in the rendering, the homeowner is considering a wind turbine. Vertical-axis wind turbines have received a lot of hype lately because of a local manufacturer; however, if considering this technology, remember that there are several other manufacturers, domestic and international.
Other items of note include salvaged wood flooring and cabinet fronts. Overall, this is another high-quality, but not ‘experimental’, home. As architects continue to green their own homes, let’s hope they use their experience to help educate their peers.
