“Little Big Home” was coined to describe this 3,050-square-foot home, designed around a young family of four. From the insulated concrete foundation to the green roof, the home incorporates features aimed at practical comfort for a busy family.
Smaller sized rooms allow the family to take advantage of the zoned HVAC system, which includes solar-assisted radiant flooring. Also underfoot are bamboo floors and oak salvaged from the previous structure on the lot. The exterior is clad with durable cement fiberboard. There are 448 square feet of green roofing, with white reflective cool roofing throughout.
A tiled, gas-start fireplace anchors the “heart” of the home—the kitchen. Built-in tile benches invite children to visit with a busy parent as dinner is prepared. The kitchen is open to the family room at the rear and the dining room towards the front. Placed above the fireplace is a solar chimney, or a space open to the second floor, which allows for warm air to rise and temper the upper floor. In summer, an exhaust fan removes warm air and increases circulation, or the windows above can be opened to do this naturally. The tinted concrete countertops were locally fabricated.
Plans for the home received a Chicago Green Home rating of 3-Star +.
